Taconic Shave Products

Eucalyptus Mint

I’m back! From were you might ask, I’m back from the land of the hair and it’s good to be back. If you are still confused let me explain. I was on social media at one point as Thebaldnation. I reviewed shaving products for bald men for a couple of years. Then I participated in no shave November one year and it totally threw me for a loop. I decided to grow some hair and a beard for about a year and a half. The whole experience was perfect and also awakening I guess you could say. Change always comes at different times in your life and its amazing how one change can spark so many other changes at the same time. So I changed my whole social media presence and revolved around beard products. Then, just like that, I decided to go back to the bald lifestyle and once again I had to change everything around. I learned a couple of valuable lessons. One of those lessons is to just be yourself and speak from the heart, people will respect you for it. Another lesson I learned along the way is that changing your online presence can be tough. It’s hard to start all over again. So now I’m back but I rebranded myself under my own name. I figure, you can’t be more original than that right?

What do you look for in shaving products before you buy? What kind of consumer are you? Do you fall into the category of you need to know all you can about a product before you buy? or, are you a fly by the seat of your pants kind of consumer that buys something if it looks good? Honestly there’s no wrong answer because the choice is really up to you. I lean more towards shaving products that have either all natural and organic ingredients or products that have partial natural and organic ingredients. To be honest with you I have used a lot of products in the past that were all chemical based, but that was before I started researching shaving products with more natural ingredients. I also look for products that have more bang for your buck such as shave soap that comes in a container that you can also build the lather in. I’m a big fan of those soaps, that saves you time in the bathroom. I also look for soap that has a reputation for a lot of lather. Soaps that make a lot of lather typically take less time to initiate a pre-lather either in your shave bowl or brush. I recently had a chance to try the ‘Eucalyptus Mint’ shave soap and aftershave splash along with the unscented pre-shave oil and a pack of 5 Parkers DE blades from Taconicshave.com which are also the proud owners of Supersafetyrazors.com

The ‘Eucalyptus Mint’ shave soap came packaged in a 4 oz. tin. The soap puck was in a clear package inside of the tin for protection. This also means that the puck can be taken out of the tin and put in a shave bowl for blooming or just to build a lot of lather. If you have never bloomed your shave soap I suggest you try it. Blooming your shave soap makes for a fantastic shave like no other. I have not bloomed this soap yet, the key word is yet! The ‘Eucalyptus Mint’ soap is made by artisan soap makers in New York’s Hudson Valley. They handcraft this soap in small batches to ensure you get a product with the highest quality possible. When a soap is handcrafted in small batches the artisan or artisans making the soap have more control over what and how much of what goes into the soap. Glycerin-Coconut-Palm-Safflower-Olive-Castor & Essential Oils-Bentonite clay-Soybean & Wheat Protein are some of the natural ingredients found in the ‘Eucalyptus Mint’ offering many skin care benefits such as Treats oily skin and removes dirt, helps prevent dry and rough skin, Helps treat Eczema-Psoriasis & Acne-skin infections-wrinkles & fine lines, Acts as an Humectant attracts water from the air trapping it in your skin, Acts as an emollient that keeps your skin not only moist but soft and supple to touch promoting elasticity, Contains Vitamins A-C & E, Antimicrobial-Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory properties protecting the skin from harmful bacteria killing off free radicals that can lead to premature aging. Bentonite clay is one of my favorite ingredients you can find in a soap.

Bentonite Clay has so many benefits such as all the ones I listed above plus many other benefits as well. Bentonite Clay has a very special ability, it produces an strong negative charge when hydrated bonding to the positive charge carried by toxins. It draws toxins out of your body! So yes I definitely get excited when I see soaps that contain Bentonite clay. The unscented pre-shave oil came in a 2 fl. oz plastic bottle with a pump style lid. This pre-shave oil is also handcrafted with all natural and organic oils consisting of Vitamin E, organic safflower, organic castor and grape seed oil. Not only do these oils have lots of skin care benefits such as attracting moisture and keeping your skin hydrated and moist, they also have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help sooth dry and irritated skin. The list goes on and on. The unscented pre-shave oil also is designed to provide a barrier of protection between your skin and razor while creating a smoother shaving surface increasing the glide for your razor. More glide means less irritation with less chances of cuts and nicks. The alcohol free Eucalyptus Mint aftershave splash came in a 4 fl. oz amber tinted bottle. The amber tint helps prevent the break down of the organic and natural oils found in this aftershave splash. To much direct sunlight or exposure can and will start to break down the oils found inside changing the consistency and functionality of the aftershave splash. The Organic Herbal Extract, Glycerin, Allantoin, Essential Oils, Menthol eucalyptus, spearmint and added witch hazel have anti-inflammatory, toning and antiseptic properties that help moisturizing and heal your skin after shaving. The menthol will leave your skin with a lasting cooling sensation adding comfort to the long list of benefits.

After I prepped my skin for my nightly shave I first applied the unscented pre-shave oil. I only needed 2-3 pumps of oil to coat my head. The consistency of the oil was thick but not to thick. I always add a couple drops of water to dilute the oil a little bit making it easier to spread evenly across my head. The added water did not change the effectiveness of the oil. It was still thick and provided a nice glide for my razor. While the oil was soaking into my scalp and working its magic I started working on getting my lather ready. I decided to go with my shave scuttle for building a good lather. I saturated my brush prior to my shaving routine opening up the bristles getting them ready to soak up some lather. I tilted the container of soap on its side and started rotating my brush across the surface creating a thin pre-shave lather that dripped into my scuttle. After I reached the desired amount I then continued to rotate my brush inside my bowl with a little force turning the thin mixture into a thick and rich shave ready lather. I filled the outside reservoir of the scuttle with hot water to keep my lather warm. The warm lather applied evenly across the top, sides and back of my head. Next I changed the DE blade of my pre-selected safety razor and started shaving. The pre-shave oil created a slick surface that made my razor glide across the surface of the skin. The head shave was close and comfortable with no irritation cuts or nicks. The warm and thick lather provided a lot of cushion for my razor and felt very luxurious on my skin. I was very impressed. The aroma of the soap was very minty and pleasant. The face shave had the same results as the head shave did. I washed the remaining soap off of my head and face noticing right away the fantastic post shave feel the soap provided. the water increased the cooling sensation from the soap as well as the level of slickness. My skin felt very slick. I patted my skin dry waiting a couple of minutes before moving on. After my nightly was completed I finished it off with the ‘Eucalyptus Mint’ after shave splash. I turned the bottle upside down over the palm of my hand a retrieved 6-8 drops and lightly patted it on the top of my head working my way down to my neck and over my face. The menthol added a nice tingling sensation that increased the intensity from the shave soap. My skin felt cool and refreshed. I followed it up with an aftershave balm and lotion to keep my skin soft and smooth.

I wanted to test this soap in regards to building lather in two ways. The first way and always my favorite way is with a shaving bowl. The second way by just rotating my brush over the surface of the soap. What I found out was that I liked both methods and with both methods you could preserve product, let me break it down for you. My fist test was by way of shave bowl, actually it was my shaving scuttle. If you are not familiar with a scuttle its basically a shave bowl that keeps your lather warm. You can research it on google for more details. I started with a saturated shave brush making rotations on the surface of the soap creating a thin pre-shave lather. I tilted the tin of soap on its side over my scuttle as I was rotating the brush so my pre-shave lather would fall into the scuttle. Then I started the process of creating a shave ready lather by continuous brush rotations with minimal force adding small amounts of water if needed until I reach the consistency I’m looking for. The second method was merely just rotating my wet brush across the surface of the soap until it formed a thin pre-shave lather. Instead of transferring it to a bowl like last time I decided to work it into a shave ready lather by rotating the brush across my skin turning the once thin lather into a thicker lather.

The truth is I like both methods, there are pros and cons to each one. The scuttle method takes more product to achieve and allows lots of thick shave soap left over in your bowl that you can save until the following night. The next night I added a little more water to re-work the lather back into its former glory. The later strategy works more on the side of preserving product. It only takes a small portion on your shave brush to turn into a brush full of lather. The downfall is you have no way of saving the left over lather on your brush, so the remaining lather goes down the drain. No matter how you choose to create lather with the ‘Eucalyptus Mint’ your going to have a fantastic experience. Would I suggest this soap to other shavers? Yes absolutely! Thanks for reading.

Dichotomy Beard Products

Caramel Nut Mocha!

Ok so lets get down to the nitty gritty! we all know what beard products are for and what the do right? If not then here is a very quick run-down. Beard oil and balm keeps your skin and beard soft and healthy. Beard balm also contains bees wax which provides a holding power needed to help manage and maintain those fly away whiskers. Who/where and why you buy these beard products is up to you. Do you want to buy products that use all natural butters and essential oils? or products that use all chemicals? The choice is up to you, that’s the only right or wrong answer when it comes to buying beard products. What’s most important to me when I look for something new is, how natural are the products? and what kind of scent do they have or what’s available? To be honest, I do have some products that are not 100% all natural and I’m fine with that, it doesn’t keep me up at night. I try to stay on the all natural side but stray every once in a while. The scent of a product and the strength of the aroma is also important to me. My wife is sensitive to strong aromas so I have to be careful. I also don’t want to knock people over when I walk past them so the strength of the aroma really matters to me. I had a chance not long ago to review the Caramel Nut Mocha beard oil and balm from Dichotomygrooming.com They sell beard care products and also shaving products. They have several choices to choose from. One of the things I liked right away when visiting their website is how the shaving and beard products were tied together by scent. Yes men with beards do shave. Some men shave their neck/cheek lines while others shave more than that.

I on the other hand have opted to put down the razor and let my beard grow in with the natural look. I am shaving my neck line just until my beard gets long enough to hide my neck. I don’t bother with using shave soap because I only have to shave a very small area but if the area was bigger I would definitely check out the shaving cream selection from Dichotomy Grooming as well. Like I previously stated their beard care and shaving products work together through matching scents. They also carry after shave lotions in the same scents so you can match all of your grooming products with the same scent. I like that, it’s unified grooming, you can take care of your beard and shave with the same scented products and follow suite finishing it off with an aftershave lotion to help prevent razor burn. I received in the mail a 1 oz. fluid bottle of the ‘Caramel Nut Mocha beard oil’. The beard oil bottle is amber tinted to preserve and protect the natural oils used to make the beard oil. To much exposure to light can cause the natural oils to beak down and weaken. The dropper style lid helps you conserve oil by only allowing one drop at a time. Along with the oil came the pairing ‘Carmel Nut Mocha Beard Balm’ in a rounded 2 oz. jar. The rounded jar was also amber tinted preserving the natural and essential oils used to make this balm. The first thing I did before anything else was open each container so I could smell the product. The caramel nut mocha aroma is fantastic, if these products tasted the same way they smelled I would have eaten them by now, but unfortunately these products are just for beard care and should not be eaten.

I washed and towel patted my beard to dry in anticipation of trying these new products. I applied 3-4 drops of oil to my hands and rubbed them together thoroughly coating my hands with oil. I worked the oil into my whiskers and waited a couple of minutes to let my skin and beard soak up the oil. The ‘Caramel Nut Mocha’ beard oil contains a lot of natural and essential oils such as Jojoba-Argan-Apricot Kernel-Sweet Almond-Avocado-Grapeseed & Vitamin E Oil that have a lot of skin care benefit. These oils have Vitamin E and antioxidants that help restore and balance your skin keeping it looking supple and glowing, Moisturizes Skin, Prevents Razor Burn, Promotes Skin Health, Wont clog your pores, protects and cleanses the skin, Soothes fines lines and wrinkles, Fights the early signs of aging, helps treat eczema and psoriasis, helps stimulate hair growth, makes hair more pliable and soft, keeps moisture in the scalp, protects your skin from harmful UV rays, helps keep your skin looking smooth and healthy, helps sooth chapped and irritated skin. With all those benefits I think the question you should ask yourself is why am I not using this beard oil on an every day basis.

I let the oil work its magic for a few minutes and then decided it was time to apply the balm. I can’t say enough good things about the ‘Caramel Nut Mocha’ beard balm, but here are a few. First it has a softer consistency but yet provides a light hold. A dime sized amount of balm in the palms of my hands with a little friction and its ready to coat your whiskers and provide all the management you need for the day. The fragrance follows suite with the oil only a little more milder. I noticed this is the case with every oil/balm combo I have reviewed in the past. The aroma is fantastic just like the oil. Last but not least its full of all natural and essential oils and butters that are good for you and the environment. The Apricot Kernal-Jojoba-Grapeseed and Vitamin E Oil, Mango and shea butter along Beeswax offers the same skin care benefits as the oil consisting of containing antioxidants that help restore and balance your skin keeping it looking supple and glowing, Moisturizes Skin, Prevents Razor Burn, Promotes Skin Health, Wont clog your pores, protects and cleanses the skin, Soothes fines lines and wrinkles, Fights the early signs of aging, helps treat eczema and psoriasis, helps stimulate hair growth, makes hair more pliable and soft, keeps moisture in the scalp, protects your skin from harmful UV rays, helps keep your skin looking smooth and healthy, helps sooth chapped and irritated skin. The Mango and Shea Butter also help to moisturize and reduce beard itch, prevent beard dandruff, eliminates split ends and locks in moisture.

Once the balm was worked thoroughly into my beard I ran my beard comb through my whiskers a couple of times evenly spreading the balm out. Next I grabbed my boar bristle beard brush and starting on the right side working my way over to the left side I stroked my beard downward. After reaching the end of the left side I did the same motion towards the right side. Next I started underneath my beard on the right side stroking my whiskers upward working my way to the left side again and then back to the right side. I always end my comb/brush ritual with one last stroke on the outside of my beard starting from the top with a downward stroke to bring my beard back into a resting position. The ‘Caramel Nut Mocha’ beard balm held strong all day long and helped manage any fly away strands of hair there might be. Would I recommend the ‘Caramel Nut Mocha’ to other beardsman? Absolutely! Thanks for reading.
