Orange 🍊 & Amber Delight

I look forward to different days of the week; I usually have a theme for the day. Today happens to be Thursday so it’s from a “Tube”. Tubes ROCK ! They are usually compact, slick, and easy to travel with, compared to their rigid tub counterparts.

Today was going to be great as I had chose Musgo Real “Orange Amber”. This is a great transition scent as we move between summertime, and autumn. So let’s get a closer look at this classic. Musgo Real was originally made in 1920 by the Portuguese Musgo Real co. the clock has turned, and the Claus Porto Co founded in 1887, acquired Musgo Real and is now formulated by Ach. Brito

Appearance: 5/5

Musgo Real no.1 Orange Amber is a 100ml tube of shave cream. The tube utilizes a aluminum based orange packaging, that seems to be of a little thicker wall. The Orange is bold with the Musgo Real logo; a crown đź‘‘ and a very utilitarian no.1 Orange Amber embossment. Simple and to the point making this a humble visual to the cream inside. This is a higher end cream despite its packaging and falls into that price point of $22 for 100ml or, 3.5 ounces.

Performance: 4/5

This mini review can be finished in two words; Lanolin and Glycerin. This is the base of this top shelf cream. This allows the cream to have amazing glide, as well as being moisturizing, and to leave your face feeling not only healthy, but smooth as we say a baby’s bottom. The only detraction in my experience is the moderate lather it produces; many would argue this is not an issue, but I like a little thicker lather. Brush used: Envy Shave custom Silver tip Badger.

Fragrance: 5/5

This is a subjective topic as always YMMV, and one person wonderful is another’s awful (Lilac Vegetal for instance). The aroma wafted up to me as I lathered the cream with my brush. A combination of orange and musk along with a pronounced Amber, benzoin smell. I don’t usually pick up on the aroma that quickly, but this was well formulated.

Post Shave: 5/5

Wonderful as the lanolin has done its job perfectly. My face felt like a dream with a BBS outcome, but no redness or, irritation anywhere after 3 passes, and a mild touch up. I really debated if a post shave splash or, balm was needed. I ended up using Fine Accoutrements Italian Citrus, with a drop of Aqua Velva musk.

I hope this little overview of Musgo Real’s no.1 Orange Amber cream in the tube was somewhat helpful. I purchased this cream from Straight Razor Designs Musgo Real Orange Amber Happy shaves my friends, and stay smooth.

SOTD: June 9th, 2015 “Tobacco Tuesday”

What an excellent shave today, I could not have wanted more. Barrister & Mann always delivers top- shelf performance, and unique original scents.

To most people when they hear “tobacco” the instantly think about cigarettes or, a cigar; well I don’t use either. I do however enjoy the fragrance of both green uncut tobacco leaf and even the aromatic smell of a pipe with that signature Burley or, cavendish scent. Today happened to be that theme day for the tobacco scent in any form. The brand or, what part of the shave that tobacco scent arrived was irrelevant, but I pretty much used it throughout.

Again a great shave, a wonderful scent, and so far the sun is shinning. The day is looking pretty darn good, shave on !

SOTD: May 4th, 2015 “SJOL Cedarwood Clary Sage”

Happy Monday everyone ! Unlike many things in this world straight razors; are one of those things, when properly cared for get better with age. I’d add wooden stringed instruments, and paintings to that list as well. There is just something to the feel of a vintage straight razor that is nearly 100 years old, and delivers a close and comfortable shave. The old time construction just lasts and they had pride in their craft; My Vintage Boker 1056 is no exception.

008

Our Vendor of the month St. James of London is another one of those products that takes pride in their craft since 1953 ! A Creighton’s made brand, this cream whilst brushless; when you use a brush excels and even IMHO creates an exceptional lather that left me with a ample cushion and tons of glide. I find the aroma unique as it is called Cedarwood and Clary Sage; which is very obvious, but there is a citrus note that really brightens things up, as well as a grounding fragrance that is masculine and exudes confidence.

SOTD: April 3rd, 2015 here come the Ducks !

I recently bought 3 new soaps, I also have a rule about reviewing anything especially a soap; that I must use it at least 3 times before I’ll even give an initial impression. Today’s shave made the second shave for Soap Commander’s “Renewal” fougere. The rest of this shave was great my Dubl Duck “Goldedge” is just amazing, the Mother Earth scuttle kept my lather warm, and the more I use a scuttle the more I learn temperatures really do make a difference (read this as don’t use too hot of water; warm is more than sufficient).  Lastly the Plisson synthetic is IMO at best adequate….many people love this brush as the brush of the “Gods” which I have issue calling anything.  Instead of focusing on what I don’t like I’d rather say the brush is super soft and despite other adversity does make a very nice lather. Enjoy the photo I hope my picture speaks more than I wrote, and one more use and Soap Commander’s “Renewal” is getting its review just in time for spring !

Your first straight razor ? Ralf Aust in 5/8 …Absolutely !

I see lately a huge interest in shaving traditionally with a straight razor, also called a cut-throat razor, or simply a “straight”. I see a lot of opinions, and of course I have my own as well. I am not an expert, but I know a few 🙂 and they all are in agreement that while cheaper brands are in the market; you really are getting your monies worth and then some with a 5/8 round point Ralf Aust in faux ebony scales !

This is a great jumping point or, even the only blade you’ll ever need…..until you catch the bug, and want that next “straight” to add to your shave den ! I hope you enjoy this fast overview, and shave with my NEW format !!! Please comment below I’d love to hear your thoughts on the razor, your suggestions, and what you thought of my new video style ! Thanks for watching. – Aaron

SOTD: January 24th, 2015 a week of Thiers-Issard

It’s snowing outside and cold as can be, but who really cares, I have enough to keep me busy, and my shave today started my day off absolutely on the right track ! My new video equipment came today so time to learn to use it as well so future posts will have more video real time reviews. But for now here is a little SOTD to keep things up to date.

004

I have been rotating my favorite straight razors this week Thiers-Issard as I have four so it was a nice transition to some newer ones like the 6/8 Bison Red Stamina ! What an amazing shaver this is ! perfectly honed, and flawless in balance, and hand feel.

002

I’ve also been rocking with Mitchell’s Wool Fat all week as well, as it’s about on it’s last leg, and I’m trying to use it up. I decided to Uber-Lather mixing MWF, Musgo Oakmoss cream, and finally some glycerin. This was a SLICK shave ! really thick lather as you can see in the photo’s, and all whipped up with a Nathan Clark custom silvertip on its maiden voyage as I recently bought a 2-band and a silvertip brush from Nathan. Perfect performance ! I could not be happier with the performance, first use and great lather out the gate, I can’t wait to see how this performs after a dozen or so uses.

003

Finished it all off classic ! some alum, and Aqua Velva Ice Blue ! The MWF was definitely dominant and I find the Musgo Oakmoss there but very tolerant with most other scents, and took a back seat to the Mitchell’s. Finally as I had to take care of the snow situation from last night I used some Aveeno Naturals lotion. The Aveeno lotion is quite thick and goes on pretty thick as well, but absorbs easily once it reaches body temperature it seems.

Bottom line great Saturday shave and great gear ! I love shaving with these Thiers-Issard razors so needless to say I have had a great week, but truth told I must confess I think today’s Bison Red Stamina in 6/8 is maybe my favorite TI in my den. Happy shoveling to everyone in the northeast with me, and more so happy shaving !!!! – Shave on everyone -Aaron

SOTD: August 12th, 2014 “Trafalgar Tuesday”

In keeping with my commercial or, big name brands week I moved over to one of my favorite scents. Truefitt & Hill’s Trafalgar; a wonderful mix of lime and a herbal quality meets a modern elegant mature fragrance. It takes barely anything to make a huge lather and the slickness is top-notch. I will give Truefitt & Hill for commercial soaps the seal of approval in my opinion right along side of Castle Forbes, and Trumpers or, even new comers like Baume.BE or Esbjerg (all EU brands) in the performance overall; simply a great cream. I find it is even better in my Robert’s feats of clay and whipped into a luxurious lather with my Vie-Long “Cachurro” Spanish horse hair brush.

005

For my razor I mixed it up, and am using for the first time my new Synergy “Name Taker” in  open comb variation ! This razor is a hybrid between the Polywog and the Symmetry; offering the best of both worlds. Weighing in at a hefty 92 grams and a “Stubby” solid handle. This open comb razor delivers the goods without a doubt, and at the affordable  price tag under $30 USD this is a must have if you like a thicker solid handle and a shorter length. I paired this with a Derby Extra on use two….. I bet this razor would shine though with a Bolzano or a Med Prep, but easily delivered a BBS literally not a single touch up and smooth as could be.

001002

I ended the shave as I would any other; cold water rinse, Shavex alum ( minimal feedback which is great ), and finally Royall Lyme after shave splash and Captains Choice lime at a 50/50 mix, followed by a generous helping of the T&H Trafalgar balm which is featured at the top of this post.

Overall an excellent shave ! Have a great day everyone and even better shaves. – Aaron
